Grammar Stage
In the grammar stage, students build strong foundations through memory, language, number sense, reading, history, geography, and the arts.
We seek to equip every student with the skills necessary for good writing, including spelling, grammar, style, and clarity. Students write often and correctly in each subject area, learn to think clearly through clear writing, and encounter many styles of writing through classic and high-quality literature.
Students learn the major forces, ideas, and events that have shaped history. Beginning with local history and geography, they sequentially expand toward the world while using biographies, illustrations, field trips, guest speakers, music, art, foods, and architecture to make history come alive.
Students master basic mathematical functions and tables while developing conceptual and practical understanding through frequent story problems. Mathematics instruction emphasizes consistency, logic, and the enduring structure of mathematical systems.
Phonics serves as the primary building block for reading. Students are encouraged to read correctly as soon as possible, engage high-quality children’s literature, and develop comprehension, fluency, word-attack skills, and a lifelong love of reading.
Students learn the basic fundamentals of drawing, appreciate and reflect the beauty of the world around them, study master artists of Western culture, and gain experience with a variety of art media.
